The Mount Blend was launched in January 2020 to commemorate the move to our new roastery at HMP The Mount in Hemel Hempstead, and the inauguration of our top-line new roaster, ‘Laura’ the Loring S70 Peregrine. A lot has happened since then, but one thing hasn’t changed – our drive to produce top-quality coffees whilst training and rehabilitating prisoners, proving that premium products can come from the most unexpected places.
This is the third version of our house filter blend, The Mount, and it again combines two cross-continental coffees. The first coffee is from seven farmers close to Datanlí, a small town in Jinotega, Nicaragua. “Datanlí” is an indigenous word meaning “where water falls”, and relates to the water sources that originate at the top of the mountains in the nearby nature reserve, and flow all the way down to the farms of countless coffee growers that lie below. This region is one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems in Jinotega.
The second component, Bulessa, is the new crop of a favourite single origin coffee from last year. Tizita Bizuneh runs the Bulessa washing station in Sidamo, Ethiopia as a project to empower women working in coffee throughout the production chain. The station is operated entirely by women, and services 400 mainly female regional smallholder producers.
